What's podfade, you ask?
You know that feeling you get a few episodes in. When you are no longer excited about recording your episodes or can't seem to come up with topics to even talk about? Or when you have the content, but are getting discouraged because your numbers were steadily climbing and now they don't seem to budge no matter what you put out there? When you feel like giving up and throwing in the towel on all your hard work? That, my friend, is podfade.
The Urban Dictionary defines podfade as "when a podcast suddenly stops releasing new content without a final show or an announcement". Podfade happens to at least 75% of podcasts and it usually happens between episodes 5 and 8.
Running a podcast is a lot of work. You have content creation, recording, editing, marketing, promoting, etc. So many moving parts are required when you are doing a podcast. You could outsource some parts of your podcast, like marketing and production, but if you don't have the right plan in place, you could still end up facing the dreaded podfade.
In order to avoid succumbing to podcaster burnout (another name for podfade), here are a few tips:
Make sure that you have enough content to record at least 52 episodes or more. This could be in a Trello board, on a Google Doc, on a piece of paper...really anywhere. Brain dump all of your ideas on the topics you want to talk about, some may turn into episodes and some may not. Let's just get the ideas out of your head and onto something tangible, ok.
Make sure that you have enough time to invest in your podcast. Like I stated before, running a podcast takes A LOT of time and effort. If you're short on time, my next tip is gonna be just what the doctor ordered.
Batch, batch, batch!! The best thing you can do to get more time, is to batch everything. Batch your content creating. Batch recording your episodes. Batch editing your episodes. Batch and schedule releasing your episodes. Batch, batch, batch! Believe me, this will be your best friend when time is your enemy.
Hopefully, these tips will help you the next time you are feeling podfade. Remember, you are not alone. This happens to a lot of podcasters at one time or another. Just keep going. Keep recording. Keep releasing those episodes. People need to hear what you have to say. Don't give up! You've got this!!
