Hello, fellow podcasters! đď¸
Today, we're delving into a crucial topic that often lurks in the shadows of our podcasting journeyâburnout (insert scary music heređ). As passionate podcasters, we set ambitious goals, dream big, and strive for impact, but in this pursuit, we sometimes forget to take care of the most important part of the equation: ourselves. Whoâs with me?
Let's explore the common pitfalls when it comes to podcast goals and, more importantly, discover how to navigate them while preserving your enthusiasm and well-being.
đThe Allure of Podcasting Goals
Podcasting is an amazing medium for self-expression, connecting with others, and making a positive impact. It's no wonder we set those HUGE goals; after all, who doesn't want their podcast to reach millions of people? However, these goals can become double-edged swords if not handled with care. Letâs talk about one pitfall and 1 tip that will help with those over achieving goals and how to make them a bit more achievable.
âPitfall 1: Overcommitting
Setting ambitious goals is admirable, but overcommitting to reaching high-end goals can lead to burnout. You're not a content-producing machine, my friend; you're a human being with limited time and energy. Youâre amazing, girl, but you canât do all the things for all the people all of the time. I donât think AI can do that, yet we think we can do it! Donât fall into the trap of overcommitting to reach those high-end goals.
đĄTip 1: Prioritize Self-Care
Recognize that self-care isn't selfishâit's essential for your mental and physical well-being. Schedule breaks, maintain a healthy work-life-podcast balance, and know that it's okay to adjust your goals if needed, and believe me, it WILL be needed! Realize that you canât serve others when your tank is on empty. If you are like me, and you struggle with this, just think that the more rest you get, the more people you can serve. Donât forget to take care of yourself first. It doesnât need to take a long time, start with 5 minutes doing something that makes you feel replenished and energized. You and your audience will thank you for it.
đThe Metrics Maze
Podcast success is often measured by metrics like downloads, subscribers, and ratings. While these are important, you shouldnât JUST obsess over them. We can easily get wrapped up in what I will call the Metrics Maze. You can go down one way and realize itâs a dead end, or go down another route and get pretty far, only to realize you have been going around in circles. Letâs talk about one pitfall and one tip to come out of the Metrics Maze successfully.
âPitfall 2: Obsessing Over Metrics
When we fixate on numbers, we lose sight of the meaningful connections and transformative experiences that podcasting can offer. The numbers are not the whole story. There are podcasters out there that have huge numbers, but no connection and they certainly arenât changing peopleâs lives. Friends, DO NOT FOCUS ON JUST THE NUMBERS! Focus on the transformation you are providing, and the lives that you are impacting. That is where the TRUE value lies.
đĄTip 2: Realign Your Focus
Shift your focus from metrics to your mission or your message. Reconnect with why you started podcasting. Celebrate stories of impact, listener engagement, and the genuine connections you've forged. By shifting your focus from the numbers in the analytics to the emotional and personal impact you are making, you can begin to see that your goals will also need to shift to accommodate that. This shift in focus will help you to see what really matters and whether or not your goals align with that mission and message.
đThe Comparison Trap
In the podcasting world, it's easy to fall into the comparison trap. We see other podcasters hitting milestones, and it can leave us feeling inadequate. What we donât see is what things in the background have led to these successes. These âsuccessfulâ podcasters could have a team of advertising agents, marketers, content creators, editors, publishers, etc., while weâre over here by ourselves doing all the things. Doesnât seem like a fair comparison when we look at it like that, does it? Letâs take a deeper look at a pitfall and a tip to avoid this comparison trap.
âPitfall 3: Constant Comparison
Comparing your journey to others' can erode your self-confidence and lead to burnout. We canât compete with anyone because we donât know how far they are in their podcasting journey or what assets they have access to that we may not. Constantly comparing ourselves to everyone else only leads to frustration, burnout and eventually quitting on ourselves and our passions - and nobody wants that, do they?
đĄTip 3: Stay in Your Lane
Remember that every podcaster's journey is unique, YOUR podcasting journey is unique. Stay focused on your path and your message, embrace your authenticity and your voice, and trust that your audience will find you. You donât need to compare yourself to anyone else. You have a message to share and you are the only who can say it. Comparison only leads to you thinking that someone has already said it better than you. This is a lie!! You are the only one who can say your message. Your audience will not accept any substitute, and they deserve to hear it from you.
đPerfectionism Paralysis
Perfectionism can be paralyzing. We want every episode to be flawless, and this pursuit of perfection can drain our creativity and motivation. If you are like me, youâve lived your life trying to be perfect, to look perfect, to do everything perfectly, to be the perfect mom, the perfect partner, the perfect daughter, the perfect friendâŚjust to be PERFECT! And guess what, NONE OF US IS PERFECT! Iâm a woman of faith, and in my opinion, the only perfect person was Jesus Christ and he died on a cross and even he had faults.
âPitfall 4: Chasing Perfection
Perfectionism can lead to analysis paralysis, making it difficult to produce new content. Our constant need to be perfect leads to one thing, and that is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! When we want everything to be perfect, we end up not doing anything at all. My coach always tells us that done is better than perfect. At the beginning, everything we create is bad - but the more we do it, the better it will get. We donât improve without practice.
đĄTip 4: Embrace Imperfection
Recognize that imperfection is part of the creative process. Like I said, Done is better than perfect. Your authenticity shines through your flaws and vulnerabilities. No one wants to hear from people that are perfect and do everything perfectly. Thatâs not real life, that is fiction and it belongs in the movies. People will engage with you because you are just like them. If you guys didnât know, I am a HUGE Marvel fan. The reason I like Marvel so much is because I can relate with every single character in some way, shape or form. I may not relate to their superpowers or their heroic ability, but I can relate with their human aspect, I can relate to their struggles and to the way they work to overcome them. Embracing your imperfections and sharing that with your audience will do the same thing for you.
đThe Weight of Expectations
External pressures and expectations, whether from sponsors, listeners, or even ourselves, can be overwhelming. We are all trying to perform and give our all to everything we do, whether itâs in our businesses, our families, our relationships or at work. We expect so much of ourselves and it can be crippling at times.
âPitfall 5: External Pressure
When you're podcasting to meet external expectations, the joy can quickly fade. You need to make sure that you are podcasting for YOUR OWN expectations and not the expectations of others. You have to make sure that you are aware of what your goals are for your podcast and what you are wanting to accomplish every time you hit record.
đĄTip 5: Reconnect with Your Why
Revisit your initial "why." Authenticity, positivity, and communication are our guiding principles. Align your podcasting goals with your heart-centered message, and you'll find renewed purpose. Tap into the reason behind starting your podcast. Keep it simple. Why did you want to start? Was it to share a message? Was it because you felt alone and you wanted to offer other people a sense of community, so they didnât feel alone? Find a way to reconnect with that reason. Journal, meditate, talk to yourself. Remember why you are doing this.
